What is Furry?

Furry is a broad term that has many meanings, but it is usually used in its plural form - Furries. The term is used to describe the furry fandom (also called Furry Fandom), an individual who functions as a member of the community, or an anthropomorphic furry character. Some common examples of anthropomorphic characters are Nick Wilde from Zootopia , Diane Foxington from Not Bad , Tails from Sonic , Goofy from Bizarre Adventure , Po from Kung Fu Panda, and more. What all of these characters have in common is that they have many human qualities, and they walk on all fours, talk, cook, and behave like civilized humans in every way.

Furry fandom is a large fan community that focuses on furry characters such as foxes, dogs, wolves, cats, and more. The fandom includes many attractions and significant artistic contributions, such as paintings, animations, fiction, films, as well as costumes called fursuits.

There are many, many ways to be furry. Consuming or creating anthropomorphic content is just one way; other ways can range from attending furry conventions to wearing a fursuit costume, but it doesn't end there.

What is a fursona?

A fursona is an original character that a person creates for themselves, and is used as a tool to express their true personality, or alternatively in the creation of an alter ego, a character with its own unique character and personality. Mickey Mouse, for example, is considered a fursona that represents Walt Disney. And Bugs Bunny represents Warner Bros.

Fursona can be used in a variety of ways: you can use it as a social media profile icon, create stickers in its image, order paintings featuring it, and even order a fursuit - a furry character costume.

Furry art

Crafting is a very common hobby in the furry fandom. From drawing anthropomorphic art and writing fan fiction, to making Plushie and Fursuits.

Creation requires great skill, and there is a lot of competition throughout the fandom. Each artist is determined to prove themselves, and market their products to the community.

Fursuits

The Fursuit costumes are the flagship of the community's artisanal creators. These are handmade costumes that are customized to the taste of the costumer, or the creator. These costumes are very expensive, and the price of a full-body Fursuit starts at $1,000 and only goes up from there.

Since the vision in a fursuit is relatively limited, fursuiters often use a handler, a person whose job is to help the fursuiter put on and take off the costume, as well as provide close supervision throughout the entire chase, including guarding him when necessary.

Conferences and events

There are hundreds of conventions and events around the world revolving around the furry fandom, mostly held in North America and Europe. Some popular conventions are Anthrocon, Midwest FurFest, NFC, EuroFurence, and many others.

Participants from many countries come to these conferences, showcase their Fursuits, and meet with members of other communities. At these conferences, you can purchase many items of furry art, such as bracelets, brooches, books, comics, and even pre-made Fursuit costumes.

As of today, a Furry convention has not yet been held in Israel, but we hope that one day we too will have our own conference.
